Like traditional plastic, wheat straw is extremely durable and lightweight as well as being food safe certified, BPA free and FDA approved. This is a renewable alternative and needs no chemical fertilizers to grow as does not need to be chemically treated to be used as a sustainable material. As a by-product after harvesting wheat this straw has historically often simply been burnt to dispose of which releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In this case the fact that when growing as photosynthesis occurs wheat straw plants actually extractmore carbon dioxide from the air than they produce therefore creating a carbon neutral product. Also the use of this product offers an additional source of income through the ability to now sell this by-product in the harvesting of wheat rather than just disposing of it.
